Members of Audible.com get legal access to over 50,000 books online.  Getting started is a snap - simply download their viewer and search their inventory/library of book titles.  Depending on your membership level, you'll get to preview book with streaming audio too - a nice touch.  When you find a book you want to select, you simply purchase it using your membership credits.  Costs vary depending on your membership plan - typically about $10.

Once the book is downloaded, you'll be able to listen to it on your PC or simply export it to your iPod or other mobile device as an MP3 or similar file type.  We had no trouble exporting them to audio CD format to listen in our car during our commute's - and it was easier and faster than other competing services.
